The start of Cherut

The driving force behind our organization Cherut is Johanneke van Slooten. In 2009 she made contact with women behind the windows, after which warm relationships started. Every woman needed support in her own way and Johanneke felt it was her calling to help them. Listening to each other and stand together form the basis for the start of Cherut more then 10 years ago. Cherut is a Hebrew word and means Freedom. The organisation offers professional guidance and support in all kinds of areas to offer opportunities to girls, women and transgenders in a situation of prostitution, exploitation and human trafficking.

Vision Cherut

'A just society without forced prostitution and exploitation'

As an organisation, we see it as a fundamental human right not to have to work in prostitution or end up in another situation of exploitation. That is why we want to stand for a society in which no one feels forced by pimps or circumstances to start or remain in prostitution. We recognize the different reasons and systems that bring and hold someone into prostitution. The provision of resources, real alternatives, access to safe shelter and finance if necessary, access to education and the labor market coupled with tailor-made psychosocial support are needed to provide choice.

The Cherut team

Awareness & Training

The Cherut team consists largely of volunteers. They are committed to the organization with great passion. There are several people in our team who are also committed to raising awareness about prostitution and human trafficking. Based on their own experience and/or experience as an outreacher or social worker at Cherut, they provide a unique insight into the reality of this world in Belgium.

Johanneke

Johanneke is the founder and director of cherut. She has a degree in social work and has a passion for social justice in society. She speaks by invitation in churches, for teams, students and gives lectures and trainings.

Andrea

Andrea has been involved with Cherut for eight years. She lives in the Netherlands and regularly gives presentations for churches, companies, associations and schools. Her passion is standing up to injustice and creating opportunities!

Liesje

Liesje is a singer-songwriter and life coach. Liesje has been involved with Cherut as an outreacher for many years as a volunteer. From the contacts and friendships she has with women in Antwerp's red light district, she speaks about the reality of prostitution and human trafficking in Belgium.

Hope

Hope is a wellness instructor who has a heart of helping women live wholeheartedly with peace, freedom and joy. She is part of the outreach team and loves making connections and building realtionships with the women. Hope networks for Cherut and spreads awareness with the international English speaking community.
